This one keeps its mischief friendly — more cozy apothecary shelf than haunted house.

Why this kit: if you want Halloween decor that is charming rather than spooky, this still life is made for you; 40 DMC shades give the potions their glassy shine and the lantern its warm glow; and the winged frogs and hidden spider reward you with small surprises as the picture grows.

Kit includes: Zweigart Aida 16-count fabric in cappuccino, DMC stranded cotton in 40 colors and a John James needle. The chart is digital-only through Merejka's free Fantastitch app, so you can zoom into every symbol; no paper chart is included. Frame and hoop are not included.

Work full cross stitches first, following the on-screen chart color by color, then finish with backstitch outlines on the bottles, lantern and wings, and French knots for the tiny highlights. Press lightly from the back once complete and frame it for the season.

Finished size: 33 x 27 cm (12.99 x 10.63 in).
